Boral Shingle Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Boral shingle repair in Los Angeles typically runs $385 to $690 installed for a standard repair of 3 to 6 shingles, including matching material, flashing checks, and a written one-year guarantee. Most Boral repairs we schedule are completed the same visit because our trucks carry a working stock of Boral-compatible profiles and colors. The way owners usually find the problem is a water stain on the ceiling after the first real rain of the season, or a shingle that slid out of place during a Santa Ana wind event.
Boral makes a dense, stone-coated composite shingle that holds up well in LA’s UV exposure, but no material is perfect. Edges crack from heat cycling, nails back out over time, and valley flashing fails faster than the shingle itself. Our job is to figure out exactly which Boral product you have, match it correctly, and fix it so you’re not back on the phone in six months. Travis Oakley has pulled enough Boral repairs across Los Angeles County to know the difference between a shingle that needs replacing and a roof that’s telling you it’s done.
Which Boral Models This Applies To
Boral’s roofing line includes several profiles that show up regularly on Los Angeles homes: the classic shingle look, the heavier shakes, and the tile-style profiles that mimic clay or slate. The most common on LA homes are the shingle and shake profiles in the standard 13-1/4-inch by 39-3/8-inch panel size. If you don’t know your model, the fastest identifier is a label printed on the underside of a loose shingle, or documentation from the original build if you have it. Most Boral installations in LA date from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s, when the product had strong distribution here.
The compatibility gotcha with Boral is color. Boral’s color runs vary enough that a shingle bought in 2012 will not perfectly match a batch made in 2018, even if the color name is the same. We carry profiles and colors that match the current Boral production, but for an older roof, we’ll often blend from a repair bundle and position the replacements so any slight variation is where the eye doesn’t land. OEM Boral shingles are the right call for visible areas; for less visible repairs, a quality aftermarket stone-coated profile can save real money while matching thickness and cut. We’ll tell you flat-out which one makes sense for your roof. Brennan Roofing is an independent contractor and not affiliated with Boral, so our recommendation is based on what’s on your roof, not a manufacturer’s sales target.
Signs Your Boral Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Cracked or broken shingle edges near the eave. Boral shingles are rigid, and after years of thermal expansion against nailed-down corners, the material can stress-crack. This is the most common failure we see on LA roofs, especially on south-facing slopes that get full sun from 10am to 4pm.
- Granule loss or bare patches showing the base material. Stone-coated shingles shed granules slowly as they age. When you see the underlying steel or asphalt base showing through, the protective layer is gone and water is working on the substrate.
- Shingles that have slid or shifted out of alignment. High wind events in the foothills and canyons can break the nail seal on Boral shingles, especially if they were installed with the wrong nail length or placement. A shifted shingle exposes the nail holes and underlayment beneath it.
- Water stains spreading from a valley or penetration. The shingles can be fine while the flashing fails. In LA, the wet-dry cycle between winter rains and long dry stretches causes metal flashing at chimneys, skylights, and valleys to flex, split, or pull away from sealant.
- Rust streaks below fasteners. Boral shingles are installed with specific fasteners, and when a fastener fails or the shingle flexes, water follows the nail. Rust streaks are a tell that water is traveling where it shouldn’t be, even if the shingle above still looks intact.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Los Angeles, a Boral shingle repair runs $385 to $690 installed for most 3-to-6-shingle replacements. A larger repair covering 10 to 15 shingles with valley flashing replacement lands between $750 and $1,150. Here’s the line-item breakdown for a typical repair:
- Matching Boral-compatible shingle material: $14 to $22 per shingle, depending on profile and color match difficulty.
- Labor and setup (includes safety, roof access, and cleanup): $175 to $300 for a standard repair.
- Flashing inspection and sealant: Included in the repair price, not billed as a separate line item.
- Underlayment patch (if needed): $40 to $85 when water has damaged the layer beneath the shingle.
- Written one-year guarantee at no extra charge. It’s part of the price, always, per the Garrison Standard.
What drives the range is access, pitch, and how many fasteners pulled through. A single-story ranch with a shallow pitch is the lowest end. A two-story Spanish-style with a 6:12 pitch and tile details is the higher end. The price we put in writing before any work starts is the price you pay, no door-knock adjustment, no “discovered damage” upsell. If we find additional issues, we show you, explain why, and hand you a new written number before anything changes.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely do two things: identify the problem area from the ground with binoculars, and clear debris from valleys and gutters to keep water moving. That’s worth doing after a wind event or a heavy rain. What a homeowner should not do is walk a steep Boral roof, especially a two-story LA hillside lot, to swap shingles. Boral shingles are rigid and brittle once aged, and they break easily if you kneel in the wrong place. Falling off a roof is a real risk, and the repair savings aren’t worth it.
The other place DIY goes wrong is the color match. You will not match a ten-year-old Boral shingle with a fresh one from a supply yard, and you won’t know why until it’s installed. We will be honest about whether the repair is even the right call. If the roof has widespread cracking and granule loss, we’ll tell you a patch buys you time but not years, and we’ll help you price both paths. “A roof that’s squared away doesn’t need a sales pitch.” Call (361) 320-9467 and we’ll give you the straight answer, including a written price before any work starts.
FAQs
Boral shingles in Los Angeles typically last 25 to 35 years depending on exposure, pitch, and installation quality, with south-facing slopes wearing faster due to constant UV. You’ll see edge cracking and granule loss accelerate after about year 18 to 20. If your roof is inside that window and the failure is isolated, a repair makes sense. Call (361) 320-9467 and we’ll give you an honest read on what your roof has left.
A single cracked or slid Boral shingle can usually be repaired by removing and replacing that shingle and checking the fasteners around it, and that’s the right call when the surrounding shingles are sound. Once you have widespread cracking across a full slope, patching becomes a losing game. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before you spend a dollar.
A standard 3-to-6-shingle Boral repair takes 60 to 90 minutes once our technician is on the roof, and is usually completed in one visit. The visit includes the repair, a quick check of nearby flashing and fasteners, and photos of the finished work. If we uncover additional damage, you’ll get a written price for that before anything else happens.
We carry Boral-compatible profiles and common colors on our trucks, which lets us complete most repairs in Los Angeles the same visit. Older color runs may require a day or two to source the closest match. We also keep repair stock for GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed lines so a mixed brand roof doesn’t slow the job down. Call (361) 320-9467 for an exact match check on your roof.
