GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If your GAF ridge vent is cracked, separated, or letting water into the attic, we stock GAF-compatible ridge vent materials on our trucks and typically complete a ridge vent replacement in Los Angeles for $650 to $1,400 installed, depending on linear footage and roof pitch. Most homeowners discover the problem after a rainstorm, when water stains bloom across the ceiling, or when they spot lifted shingle caps along the roof peak from the driveway. A failed ridge vent doesn’t just leak. It traps heat and moisture in the attic, which cooks your shingles from underneath and pushes your cooling bill up every summer. The good news is this is a same-visit fix when the decking underneath is still sound.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF makes two main ridge vent lines we install across Los Angeles: the Cobra Ridge Vent (roll-formed, flexible, with an internal baffle) and the SnowCountry Ridge Vent (rigid, with a wider profile for heavy rain and debris). The Cobra is far more common on LA homes because it handles our rain patterns fine, but we see SnowCountry spec’d on homes in the foothills where leaf litter and Santa Ana winds punish a roof peak. Identifying what you have is straightforward: look at the end cap of the vent where it terminates at the roof edge. Cobra has a visible fabric baffle and a lower profile. SnowCountry sits taller and feels rigid when you press it. GAF’s Timberline shingle line pairs with either vent, but if you have GAF’s high-wind Timberline ArmorShield or Ultra HDZ, we recommend matching the vent’s nail flange exactly to the manufacturer’s spec, because mismatched flanges are where wind-driven rain sneaks in. We’re an independent roofing contractor, not a GAF subsidiary, so we can also install a functional equivalent from Owens Corning or CertainTeed if that matches your existing setup and budget better. We’ll put that option on paper before any work starts, plain as day.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Water stains on ceilings near exterior walls. Ridge vent leaks often show up away from the peak, where water travels along rafters before dropping onto your drywall. If the stain appears after rain and spreads toward the room’s edge, the ridge is the first place we check.
  • Shingle caps along the ridge are lifting or missing. The caps aren’t decorative. They shield the vent’s nail line. Once caps go, the nails back out, the vent loosens, and wind-driven rain gets under the whole assembly. We see this constantly after Santa Ana events.
  • Visible cracking or brittleness in the vent material. LA’s UV exposure is relentless, and plastic or composite ridge vents that would last 20 years in Seattle can start cracking in 12 to 15 here. If you can see fractures or sagging sections from the ground, the vent is past its service life.
  • Attic heat that won’t quit, even with vents clear. A crushed or blocked ridge vent stops exhausting air. Your attic hits 140 degrees in August, your AC runs hard, and your shingles age faster. If energy bills climb and the attic feels like a kiln, the ridge vent’s airflow has collapsed.
  • Granules or debris accumulating under the ridge line inside the attic. That’s usually the shingle cap degrading and shedding into the vent channel. It means water’s already working past the cap and you’re on borrowed time.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-story LA home with 30 to 50 linear feet of ridge, expect $650 to $1,400 installed. Longer ridges, two-story access, steep pitches, or rotted decking discovered under the vent push that toward the top of the range or slightly beyond. Here’s the line-item breakdown on a typical 40-foot Cobra replacement in Los Angeles:

  • GAF Cobra ridge vent material: $180 to $320
  • Shingle caps to match existing roof: $120 to $240
  • Labor, fasteners, and sealant: $350 to $550
  • Decking repair (if needed): $75 to $150 per sheet

Every Brennan Roofing job comes with a written price before any work starts, and that number doesn’t move once we’re on the roof. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: one full year, in writing, and we come back for free if the installation fails. No change orders, no surprise line items at the door. That’s the Garrison Standard.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely inspect your ridge vent from the ground with binoculars, or from a ladder only if it’s on level ground and you have someone holding it. Look for lifted caps, visible cracks, and misshapen vent sections. What you should not do is walk the ridge line. Ridge work puts you at the highest point of the roof, where the slope is steepest and one misstep means a two-story fall. The fasteners and sealant along a ridge vent also have to be installed to a specific depth and pattern or the vent leaks worse than before. If you’ve confirmed damage and want it done right the first time, call (361) 320-9467. Travis Oakley will tell you straight if a repair is the right call instead of a full replacement. A roof that’s squared away doesn’t need a sales pitch.
