IKO Ridge Vent Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We install IKO-compatible ridge vents across Los Angeles, and the typical installed price runs $350 to $800 for most single-family homes, depending on ridge length and roof pitch. Most swap-outs take a single visit, and we carry the vent material on the truck. You usually discover the problem the hard way: the attic suddenly feels like a sauna in August, or you climb up to clean gutters and see cracked plastic or missing shingle caps along the peak.

What most homeowners don’t realize is that a failed ridge vent doesn’t just make the upstairs hot. It lets moisture sit in the attic, and in Los Angeles, where we get marine layer mornings followed by 90-degree afternoons, that moisture cycles in and out of the roof decking faster than people expect. The vent is small. The damage it prevents is not.

We’re an independent roofing contractor, not an IKO dealer or affiliate. That matters because we’ll tell you straight whether the IKO brand vent is worth the premium or whether a quality aftermarket profile does the same job at a better price.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO ridge vents come in a few profiles, and the compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit is slot width. IKO’s standard ridge vent is designed for a 2-inch wide slot cut along the peak, but their high-flow “ARMOURVENT” profile wants a wider 2.5-inch opening. If the slot on your existing roof was cut for a different vent, the IKO product won’t sit flush, and the gap will leak or whistle. We measure the existing slot before we ever order or load material, because guessing on this one costs a trip back.

The shingle-over profile is the most common in Los Angeles, and it’s rated for roofs with slopes of 3:12 and up. If your home is a mid-century with a low-pitch roof, which we see constantly in the Valley and up in the hills, you need the lower-profile version and likely a different net-free area calculation. We’ll identify what’s actually on your ridge, match it to the right IKO or equivalent profile, and tell you the difference in cost before any work begins.

OEM versus aftermarket: for IKO specifically, the shingle-over ridge vent is a commodity design. The material difference between IKO’s vent and a polypropylene equivalent from a quality aftermarket supplier is minimal when installed correctly. Where brand matters more is the shingle cap that covers the vent. If you’re matching an existing IKO shingle color, we’ll source the IKO cap so the ridge line doesn’t look patched.

Signs Your IKO Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Attic temperature spikes in summer. The vent’s whole job is letting hot air escape. When the attic climbs past 140 degrees on a 90-degree Los Angeles day, the vent is either clogged, undersized, or collapsed. We’ve seen attics so hot the can lights upstairs feel like heat lamps.
  • Visible cracks or broken plastic along the peak. UV breaks down ridge vent material fast in this climate. Ten years of direct sun and the plastic gets brittle. A crack means rain gets in, full stop.
  • Shingle caps lifting or missing along the ridge. High winds in the Santa Anas tear caps loose, and then the vent underneath is exposed. If you can see the vent’s profile from the ground, that’s a problem.
  • Musty smell or condensation in the attic. When the vent fails, moisture has no exit. In Los Angeles’s coastal zones, that morning marine layer works into the attic and then gets baked in. Mold and deck rot follow.
  • Whistling or flapping sounds during wind. That means the vent has come loose from the decking. It’s moving, and every gust is working the nails free. It’ll fail completely, and usually during the one week you’re out of town.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a full IKO ridge vent replacement, including tear-off of the old vent, inspection of the slot, and installation of the new vent with shingle caps, typically runs $350 to $800. The range moves based on ridge length, roof pitch, whether the decking around the slot is sound, and whether we’re color-matching existing shingles or starting fresh with a neutral cap.

Here’s how that breaks down on a typical single-story ranch with an 8-foot ridge:

  • Vent material (IKO or equivalent): $90 – $180
  • Shingle caps and fasteners: $60 – $120
  • Labor, tear-off, and disposal: $200 – $500

The price goes on paper before any work starts. No change orders once we’re on the roof. Every ridge vent we install falls under the 365-Day Done Right Promise: in writing, for one full year, and we come back for free if it fails. We’re part of the Garrison Partners family, founded in 2000, and the standard is the same on every job: background-checked technicians, uniformed, inside the promised window, with a written price in hand before we ever set a ladder.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do the diagnosis. Get a ladder, get to the eave, and look for daylight or cracks along the ridge. Take photos. That tells you whether the vent is failing, and it costs you nothing but time.

Where DIY goes wrong: replacing a ridge vent means cutting into the roof decking at the peak, and the cut has to be clean, straight, and the right width. Too narrow and the vent starves. Too wide and you’ve opened the attic to the weather. You’re also working at height, on a slope, with nail guns and shingle caps. A fall off a roof changes your year. Travis Oakley trained at LA Trade-Tech and has spent two decades on roofs across Los Angeles County, and even with that experience, a ridge replacement is not a Saturday project.
